Never use your hand to search for a hydraulic or injection leak.
Use cardboard or paper. Fluid injected into skin needs immediate medical attention. Manual pp. 33 and 44.

Maintenance schedule
Intervals are operator-manual intervals. Work sooner after severe dust, heavy load, water exposure, or long storage.
Common jobs
Check engine oil level
- Park level and stop the engine long enough for oil to settle.
- Check the dipstick. Keep the level between the ADD and FULL marks.
- Add oil through the engine filler cap only as needed. Do not overfill.
Manual p. 35.
Change engine oil and filter
- Warm the engine, park level, lower implements, stop the engine, and chock safely.
- Drain both engine-oil drain plugs into a suitable container.
- Replace the filter when due. Lightly oil the new gasket and install per the filter maker's directions.
- Refill, run briefly, stop, wait for oil to settle, then verify with the dipstick and inspect for leaks.
Oil: every 100 hours. Filter: every 200 hours. Manual p. 55 prints two crankcase capacities: 7.9 U.S. qt / 7.5 L without a filter change, and 8.5 U.S. qt / 8.0 L with a filter change. Treat the capacity as a refill reference: finish by checking the dipstick and do not overfill. Manual pp. 35-36 and 55.
Check transmission, rear axle, and hydraulics
- Park level and wait for the oil to settle.
- Check the transmission dipstick. The correct level is between the marks.
- If low, add the specified fluid through the filler plug. Do not fill beyond the mark.
Change shared transmission/rear-axle/hydraulic oil every 300 hours. Capacity: 34.9 U.S. qt / 33.0 L. Manual pp. 38-39 and 55.
Service air cleaner
- Inspect daily or every 10 hours and clean every 100 hours.
- Do not remove the element while the engine is running.
- Replace the element seasonally, or sooner if damaged or no longer serviceable.
Manual maintenance chart and pp. 46-47.
Drain fuel-filter water and sediment
- Drain the fuel filter every 50 hours and whenever contamination is suspected.
- Clean the filter every 100 hours and change its element every 200 hours.
- Keep dirt and water out of diesel storage and transfer containers.
Manual chart and pp. 32-33, 42-43.
Check coolant and radiator
- Check coolant daily or every 10 hours only when the engine is cool.
- Keep radiator fins clear of chaff and debris.
- Change coolant seasonally; inspect hoses and clamps at the same time.
Total cooling-system capacity: 8.5 U.S. qt / 8.0 L. This is the system's total coolant-mixture capacity, not a direction to pour in 8.5 qt of antifreeze concentrate. Manual pp. 30-31 and 55.
Check fan / water-pump belt
- Inspect at 200-hour intervals and adjust if needed.
- Apply 20-25 lb (9-11 kg) midway between pulleys.
- Target deflection is 7/16 to 9/16 in (10-15 mm).
Manual p. 56.
Grease chassis points
Every 50 hours, grease steering linkage, pivot shaft, clutch pedal, brake pedal, pedal shaft, 3-point linkage, and power-steering-cylinder fittings. On 2WD tractors also grease the front wheel spindles. Manual pp. 30-31.

Exact printed capacities
Engine oil with a filter change and total cooling-system capacity are both printed as 8.5 U.S. qt / 8.0 L. They are separate fluids with coincidentally matching capacities. For any refill, use the tractor's dipstick or level mark as the final check and do not overfill.
| System | U.S. | Imperial | Liters |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fuel tank | 11.1 gal | 9.2 gal | 42.0 L |
| Cooling system: total coolant mixture | 8.5 qt | 7.0 qt | 8.0 L |
| Engine crankcase: less filter | 7.9 qt | 6.6 qt | 7.5 L |
| Engine crankcase: with filter change | 8.5 qt | 7.0 qt | 8.0 L |
| Rear axle and transmission: includes hydraulics | 34.9 qt | 29.0 qt | 33.0 L |
| Power steering | 1.9 qt | 1.6 qt | 1.8 L |
| Front axle differential case and final reduction | 4.2 qt | 3.5 qt | 4.4 L |
The values above are transcribed as printed, including the manual's front-axle figures. Cooling-system capacity means the complete coolant mixture, not antifreeze concentrate alone.
Which lubricant goes where
| System | Manual-printed lubricant |
|---|---|
| Transmission, rear axle, final reduction, hydraulic system, power steering | FORD 134 |
| Engine crankcase | Ford Tractor Super Premium Engine Oil or API SF/CD quality oil. Select the SAE grade for outside temperature using the manual's chart. |
| Front wheel bearings and lubrication fittings | M-1C-137-B or NLGI grade 2 EP grease with lithium soap |
These are the original manual terms. When buying a current product, confirm the modern equivalent with New Holland or a qualified supplier before filling.
Filters and parts
Confirm against the tractor serial number before ordering. Parts can supersede over time, and early/late tractors may differ.
| Item | Reference | Interval |
|---|---|---|
| Engine oil filter | SBA140516230 (early 2120 listing) | 200h |
| Outer air filter | 86512889 (supplemental cross-check) | Seasonal / as needed |
| Hydraulic filter | SBA340500930 current catalog fitment | First 50h, then 300h |
| Model diagrams | 2120 parts catalog | Use serial number |
What changed since the manual
The manual discusses adjusting oil intervals for high-sulfur diesel. EPA says U.S. nonroad diesel is now ULSD, capped at 15 ppm sulfur after the phase-in completed in 2014. The manual's normal oil interval is therefore the useful baseline for ordinary U.S. fuel, while severe operating conditions can still justify earlier service.
